A live-action Harry Potter TV series is reportedly in the works at HBO Max!
According to trade reports on Monday, the project is described as being in “extremely early stages.” The streaming service is currently in talks with various writers and producers to see if this idea could work.
HBO Max has denied having the project officially in development as of yet. “There are no Harry Potter series in development at the studio or on the streaming platform,” HBO Max and Warner Bros. affirmed in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter.
The Harry Potter live-action project will mark the first time the series may appear on the small screen. The idea was likely triggered by the recent success and expansion of Disney+’s Star Wars series The Mandalorian.
In the past, it would be rare to see a film like Harry Potter take to the small screen due to budgetary constraints, however, in recent years, special effects and budgets for TV productions have increased significantly making this a highly feasible option.
Similar stories have circulated lately about HBO Max attempting to explore the Game of Thrones world. EW reported last week that HBO and HBO Max were meeting with writers and discussing new ideas for author George R.R. Martin’s works. They reportedly hope to explore more than one new title in the world of Westeros, but the project is still in its early stages of development.
