Surprise! Princess Beatrice is married!

Princess Beatrice and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi married in a secret, private ceremony on Friday, July 17. The ceremony was intimate with only a few of the couple’s family members and closest friends in attendance with a guest list of around 20 people.

For the special occasion, Princess Beatrice dug through the archives of Queen Elizabeth’s wardrobe to craft her wedding attire. The dress was a vintage ivory Peau de Soie taffeta dress by Norman Hartnell, who was the same designer who crafted Queen Elizabeth’s own WWII-era wedding gown.

The queen has worn the ivory peau de soie taffeta dress on multiple occasions throughout her royal reign. She first wore the dress to a state dinner during a 1961 visit to Rome. She then wore it a year later to the premiere of the film Lawrence in Arabia in 1962 and lastly in 1967, for the re-opening of Parliament. The dress was modified for Beatrice’s wedding day with the addition of organza puff-style sleeves.

Beatrice also wore one of Queen Elizabeth’s most iconic tiaras on her wedding day, which the Queen wore on her own wedding day. “Princess Beatrice wore a vintage dress by Norman Hartnell and the Queen Mary diamond fringe tiara, both belonging to Her Majesty The Queen. The tiara was worn by Her Majesty on her wedding day in 1947,” the royal family shared on their official Instagram page.

“The Queen saved this grand tiara specifically for Beatrice. It was always reserved for her as they are exceptionally close,” a source shared with PEOPLE of the legendary tiara, calling it “arguably the most sentimental [piece] lent from the Queen yet.”
