The Walking Dead has announced its final season!
The thriller series, which has aired on AMC for 10 seasons, shared that season 11 will be its final season and will conclude in late 2022.
The Walking Dead will conclude after an expanded 11th season that will feature 24 episodes, including the delayed Oct. 4 season 10 finale, as well as six bonus episodes from season 10 that will air in early 2021. This means there are officially 31 episodes to still be aired before the show’s conclusion!
For superfans of the show who are disappointed to see the series’ end, not to worry! The series’ spinoff show, The Walking Dead: World Beyond, is set to debut on Oct. 4, and season 6 of Fear the Walking Dead is premiering a week later.
The cable channel also announced two new series in the works! One of which is going to be a spin-off focused on Norman Reedus’ Daryl and Melissa McBride’s Carol to debut in 2023. The new show was created by Walking Dead chief content officer Scott M. Gimple and the show’s current showrunner Angela Kang.
But that’s not all! Gimple is also working on another spinoff titled Tales of the Walking Dead, which is described as “an episodic anthology with individual episodes or arcs of episodes focused on new or existing characters, backstories or other stand-alone experiences.”
Even with all the excitement of the new series in the works, Gimple still took a moment to make a statement for the end of the beloved original series. “It’s been ten years gone by; what lies ahead are two more to come and stories and stories to tell beyond that,” said Gimple in a statement.
“What’s clear is that this show has been about the living, made by a passionate cast, team of writer/producers, producers, and crew, bringing to life the vision put forth by Robert Kirkman in his brilliant comic — and supported by the best fans in the world. We have a lot of thrilling story left to tell on TWD, and then, this end will be a beginning of more Walking Dead — brand new stories and characters, familiar faces and places, new voices, and new mythologies. This will be a grand finale that will lead to new premieres. Evolution is upon us. The Walking Dead lives.”
