NBC
This Is Us returned with its season three premiere on Tuesday, September 25 and there was a lot to unpack from the episode!
The premiere took fans backwards, forwards and to the present and with so many storylines to keep track of, it ended with a bit more of a look at the season two cliffhanger that stunned everyone and now fans are forming theories about what is happening.
The end of season two saw and older Randall visiting his now grown daughter Tess who is a social worker and saying “it’s time to go see her,” and Tess responds, “I don’t think that I’m ready.” The end of the season three premiere picked right back up to Tess and Randall preparing to go see the mysterious “her” but this time Randall could be seen calling an older Toby who looks stressed, and is alone in his bed without a wedding ring. Randall asks Toby if he is “coming down,” and Toby responds that he “doesn’t know if he should [come down].” Randall answers: “She wants you to be there too.”
After the season two finale, the predominant theory was that the “her” in question was Beth, but now with Randall’s ominous phone call to Toby, two new theories are taking shape. Many fans seem to think the “her” is Kate, but what they can’t figure out is what is happening that is so somber that the family can’t bear to face it.
With Kate taking the frontrunner as the mysterious “her” another name that fans have now brought up is Rebecca. “My theory on the future scenes on @NBCThisisUs : Rebecca’s dying. Tess is upset over this & doesn’t want to see her. Kate & Toby have divorced. Toby values Rebecca’s respect & since he and Kate split he thinks she hates him & is scared to see her. #ThisIsUs #WhatsYourOpinion,” one viewer wrote.
Another agreed, writing, “My money is on Rebecca. That is Tess’s grandmother, whom she loves, and Rebecca had a good relationship with Toby, even though he and Kate get divorced. #ThisIsUs.”
Of course, when it comes to Dan Fogelman, the mastermind behind the show, you never know what is actually going to happen, but star Sterling K. Brown did reveal, “It is someone that we have met over the first two seasons, so it won’t be something that comes out of nowhere. Dan has already spoken to the fact that we’ve already shot parts of how he wants the series to end that’s dealing with that particular “her” as well. I think by about midseason, maybe episode 9 or so, the audience will know who that individual is.”
NBCThis Is Us Season 3: Spoilers And Predictions
12. Jack in Vietnam
While season two finally revealed how Jack died, luckily for fans and the way the series is presented, that doesn’t mean we have seen the end of Milo Ventimiglia’s Jack Pearson. Instead, season three is going to explore a new part of Jack’s life — before meeting Rebecca and becoming a father. “We’re definitely going to see Jack in the Vietnam era… We’re going to explore that side of Jack’s 20s and what brought him into the man that we all knew,” Milo Ventimiglia revealed. Of course, things won’t be as simple as they appear. The end of season two saw Kevin and his new girlfriend Zoe heading to Vietnam to explore that time in Jack’s life, and what they find might be shocking. Justin Hartley said that what his character Kevin finds out about Jack in Vietnam will be “super heartbreaking” and “shocking.” He added, “It’s not what anyone is expecting. No one is going to see it coming.” Ventimiglia echoed those sentiments saying, “People have an idea and they think they do but man, you have no idea. You won’t see what’s coming,” about what is in store for Jack.
